North Pacific Beach has seen plenty of change over the decades. Businesses have opened, closed, and reinvented themselves. Through it all, West End has remained a constant presence on the corner of Turquoise Street and La Jolla Boulevard. For generations, it has been a reliable gathering spot. A place to meet friends, strike up conversations with strangers, and unwind with a drink. The crowd is as diverse as the neighborhood itself. Regulars include pool players, dart competitors, surfers, locals, and storytellers who can hold court for hours. During the 1990s, Jack “Mac” MacPherson, one half of the infamous Mac Meda Destruction Company, tended bar here. The antics of Mac and Robert “Meda” Rakestraw were later chronicled by Tom Wolfe in The Pump House Gang. The bar has also been mentioned in Fry Koskenin’s Bar Pool: Matters of Shrewd Gamesmanship, further cementing its place in local lore. In more recent years, West End received national attention through a television appearance and completed a modest renovation. Despite the updates, it continues to embrace its straightforward, unpretentious character. It remains a neighborhood public house welcoming patrons from every walk of life.
